Q&A With Your Queue: Joni Deutsch of the Podglomerate
Hello everyone!
We are back in he fictional Pod-cafe to get us back on track with Queuesday! Sometimes we need a little break. It's cold out, The Bills appear to have imploded, and I'm just a girl trying to get through.
If this is your first time celebrating Queuesday, fear not! It's not a big commitment. The goal is to share what podcasts you're listening to. Isn't self-promotion exhausting? I think it is. So let's all have a chance to be podcast listeners, and maybe have some listeners get in on the podcast social media fun as well.
While self-promotion is exhausting, I know it's necessary. So for this Queuesday, I want to give us an interview with someone who can help you craft your marketing, publicity, and so much more! Read on!
This has been edited for length and clarity.
Q: Who are you?
A: Hello! I’m Joni Deutsch. I've been working in audio for 15 years now, with the first 10 years focused on producing, hosting, and building an audience for public radio and NPR Music.
I’m currently SVP of Marketing & Audience Development at the award-winning podcast company The Podglomerate, where I lead marketing and audience growth strategy for amazing podcast clients including The Boston Globe, Netflix, PBS, NPR stations, Harvard, and more.
Q: What podcasts are you working on?
Recently, The Podglomerate worked on an amazing assortment of shows including PBS NATURE’s Going Wild with Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, Forever Dog and MOM (Moguls of Media)’s RnR with Courtney Act, Long Leads and PRX’s Long Shadow, StillGood Creative and Fable & Folly’s The Void, Emmy Award-winning journalist David Page (co-creator of ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives’)’s Culinary Characters Unlocked, and more!
Q: What was the first podcast you listened to?
A: The start of my podcasting career actually stems from my roots as a podcast listener: through music programs. Some of the first podcasts I subscribed to were shows like NPR Music’s All Songs Considered. Growing up in West Virginia in the 90s, this is a podcast that transported me to a new soundscape and opened my eyes (and ears) to all sorts of musical discoveries in the process. Years later, that’s the exact kind of work (hosting and producing music podcasts and live broadcasts) that kicked off my audio career in Appalachia.
Q: What is the most important podcast you have listened to?
A: While it wasn’t the first podcast I listened to, it was one of the first investigative podcasts I listened to, not to mention one of the most important podcasts. Which is why I was honored to work on the marketing campaign for the second season of Bear Brook from New Hampshire Public Radio. While the two seasons cover different stories, the entire series is such an impactful listening experience, and it’s truly a masterclass in empathetic, sound-rich, and compelling storytelling.
Q: What is your favorite escape-pod?
A: Just like my music playlist, my podcast queue is ever-changing! A decade ago, my favorite podcast escapes were shows like Hello from the Magic Tavern and You Must Remember This. Today, my “escape-pods” lean more towards weekly companions like SXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast.
Q: Where Can People Find You?
A: Here’s my LinkedIn and Instagram. The Podglomerate is also on LinkedIn!
Thank you for joining Joni and me on our little imaginary coffee meet-up. I hope you eavesdropped on some great podcast recommendations for your queue. What I love about Joni's Q&A is that it highlights a range of why we listen to what.
While this is an interview, I've written over one hundred reviews in the last five years. Every single review is free, and nearly every podcast I review is free. If you like what I do, consider throwing me a tip on my Support Page so I can keep doing this.
