Review: Sweet Little Human

Review: Sweet Little Human

It's still technically Audio Drama Autumn, despite the fact that most of the United States that experiences snow, is starting to. Maryland is getting there, it's trying really hard to snow and be cold.

That's what's interesting, isn't it? Do you remember winter being different than it is now? Have you been on the road with teenagers who haven't experienced snow every year they've been learning how to drive?

Climate change isn't something to believe in. It just is, and while I do believe it's caused by humans - the impacts of the root causes are more immediate than the change in our climate. Pollution is a big deal for our lungs, every day. Runoff from factories will cause direct problems in our lifetime. There are many things that impact the climate that aren't just about a few degrees of warming.

Which is why I believe in talking about it, but not everyone is going to listen. They may, however, listen to a celebrity. Like say, Iggy Pop?

Sweet Little Human is a deliciously funny podcast. It might just be me, and the fact that I am relatively integrated into the punk rock community. Iggy Pop plays a genderless Mother Nature, making a podcast about climate change with their assistant Mr. Bee. Yes, Mr. Bee.

What I love about this podcast is that it tells beautiful little stories, informing us about aspects of the climate and climate change, around what I presume is a fictional search for Leonardo DiCaprio to become a part of the podcast. Mother Nature enlists the help of a precocious journalist, and off she goes to get a hold of the celebrity to make the podcast a hit.

This podcast is a balance between the crass reality, the harshness of climate change, and the silliness of not paying attention to it. It doesn't talk down to people in a way that's truly condescending, it tries not to be. It takes the punk rock harsh edges, and blends it beautifully into the spirit of punk rock: devotion and caring. We need to care about our planet, and what we do to it.

Sweet Little Human packs a punch in its 25 or so minute episodes. They're informative, funny, a little gross, and overall entertaining to listen to. It's a great reminder of how podcasting can push and pull convention to create something creative and impactful. It's so much fun, with a spectacular performance from Iggy Pop, and excellent reporting from the team that put this together. It's a delightfully little example of wonderful collaboration and spirit. I can't wait to see what other podcasts this production team has put out.
