Road Trip Recommendations May 2025

I live about six to seven hours away from where I grew up. I try to go back as often as I can, and often that happens over a long weekend. When I get the chance to drive those country roads alone, it's prime podcast time. It's almost a holiday weekend in the United States, so I figured let's go through some podcasts for long drives.

With the power of a well-drafted podcast queue, we can get a lot of listening done on these long weekends. Sometimes it's a chance to listen to a podcast that we've been meaning to marathon, and sometimes it's a bunch of stand-alone episodes we haven't gotten to. In today's post, we're going to go through podcasts that will keep you engaged via one long story, or shorter episodes you can mix and match!

Finished Series / Seasons

It is so frustrating to find yourself halfway through an incredible story and then you have to wait weeks, or even months, for the next episode. That's okay, though, because there are so many series that have already been completed! You can run through the whole story and then some. Below are some of my favorites!

Moonrise

Review: Moonrise
While interspersed with interviews and clips from the past, there is no choppiness to the story or quality. This is a gorgeous glide of audio documentary to listen to.

Moonrise, released in 2019 from The Washington Post is one of my favorite podcasts. For history and science lovers, this podcast is excellent storytelling around the Space Race and its influences.

Total Time: 7 hours, 40 minutes

Conspiracy, She Wrote

Review: Conspiracy, She Wrote
There’s the other side to everything, isn’t there? Heads or tails, front and back, celebration and criticism. Truthfully we can’t look at the great women of history and the world without looking at the not-so-great women.

If you want something more recent, a little more pop culture, and a whole lot more feminist, check out Conspiracy, She Wrote from Unladylike Media. This review is from the first season, but Kristen Conger has started releasing a third season about the paranormal.

Total Time: (season 1) 7 Hours, 8 minutes

36 Questions

Review: 36 Questions
I honestly think some of us could write a dissertation on this musical, but this website isn’t for that.

Do you need something shorter, fictional, and with some music? Look no further than the incredible podcast 36 Questions. Truly, this is one of the only podcasts I have listened to more than once. Why? Jonathan Groff. There's also a duck.

Total Time: 2 hours, 29 minutes

Podcasts with A Backlog

Are you feeling a little all over the place? Not in the mood to follow a particular story? Play mix-and-match with the following podcasts. Long drives are a great time for long podcast queues that keep you invested by staying varied.

Outside/In

Review: Outside/In
So I am reviewing this podcast not just because it’s great, and from a local radio station*, but also because it’s like coming home to damp earth, fresh air, and great conversation.

From NHPR this podcast is one of my favorites to pop on when I'm feeling curious and chatty. Focusing on science and nature, it covers topics like "the color blue" and hiking with kids, and some more heavy hitters along the way.

Average Episode Length: 30-50 minutes

What's Her Name

Review: What’s Her Name
By blending conversation between the hosts, interviews, and other audio these professors of history give us a riveting example of a history podcast. They combine information and storytelling in a way that is accessible and academic without being arrogant.

A history podcast that focuses on women. Hosted by two professors and overall a great blend of production, storytelling, and chemistry, this podcast is one of my favorites to chew on when I'm not able to focus on 7+ hours of content.

Average Episode Length: 45-50 minutes

Twenty Thousand Hertz

Review: Twenty Thousand Hertz
To say that this is a podcast about sound feels over simple. Explaining it further seems to need more words than I have available. It is about the relationships we have with what we hear, on almost every level.

One of my favorite podcasts (no really, I bought one of their "super soft tshirts") this show explores the world through sound. It might cover history, pop culture, relationships, psychology, and more. Explore where you can, because it's worth it.

Average Episode Length: 25-45 minutes

Did you listen to one of these podcasts?

Consider sending me a tip! I run on coffee, podcasts, and curiosity. Only one of those things costs money. The more coffee I have access to, the more podcasts I can review. I also make sure to buy locally roasted beans from small businesses, so know that you're not just supporting me, you're helping me support my community.
